Overview

Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) system design is the process of creating complex integrated circuits by combining millions and billions of transistors into a single chip. Around the world, the semiconductor industry has improved its products at a rapid pace, in terms of integration, cost, speed, compactness and functionality. It has led to economic productivity and improved quality of life. In India, VLSI design is a fast-changing technology area and an extremely challenging and creative sector that offers exciting opportunities in product development companies that includes mobile and consumer electronics, computing, telecommunications, networking, data processing, automotive, healthcare and industrial applications. 

Our program trains students to design analog and digital integrated circuits by using custom and semicustom design flow. We train students in the revolution of SMOS transistors and the miniaturisation of transistors and design methodology and the scaling of devices with nanotechnology.

Objective

  1. Establish a foundation of working principles of nanoscale devices and their design theories of next generation circuits and systems.
  2. Develop the ability to model, design, analyze, simulate, verify and implement analog/​digital circuits and systems both at chip level and board level. 
  3. Educate in embedded programming using HDL and design methodology for the development of FPGA based embedded system. 
  4. Educate in the characterization of Micro and Nano electronic devices and circuits for implementing efficient systems using top-down and bottom up approach.
  5. Promote teamwork, lifelong learning and continuous improvement.

Highlights

  • Elective Specialisation

    This program offers eight electives grouped to help students specialise in a chosen field. A student can in consultation with a HOD or Dean or module leader opt for an elective than spans multiple streams

  • Online Elective

    Students can choose elective courses online through MOOCs, SWAYAM, NPTEL and other equivalent platforms, adhering to guidelines prescribed by the University

  • International Competitions

    Students can also earn 3 or 4 credits by participating in international competitions like technical presentations, conferences and publications in journals and winning awards. Students who achieve this can be exempted from one of the elective courses in the program

  • Group Project

    A group of up to 5 students can come together to work on an interdisciplinary project in consultation with faculty. Students are required to develop a report for assessment and demonstrate the working of the product, and the project needs to be approved by a committee before it is executed. The IPR rights of all such work lies with the University only

  • Industry Internship or Project

    A student can opt for an internship in an industry, a business or research organisation. Alternately, students can undertake a mini-project which requires self-directed study that can be pursued with an affiliated faculty member. The internship needs to be approved by the HoD and Dean and students have to submit a report and make a presentation to a panel constituted by the HoD for assessment

  • Dissertation and Publication

    This course includes a dissertation and publication. Each student has to choose a relevant topic for a dissertation and this needs to be approved by a committee constituted by the HoD. The dissertation should then be converted into a technical paper published in reputed conferences or journals

Details

Teaching and Assessment

Student performance in each course is assessed through an assignment (with 50% weightage) and an examination (with 50% weightage). A student is required to score a minimum of 40% in each of the components and 40% overall for the successful completion of a course and for earning the corresponding credit(s).

Key Skill Development

  • Ability to evaluate latest developments in VLSI system design style, integration technology and fabrication of nano devices from nano materials.
  • Ability to analyse CMOS circuits and optimize them for an enhancement in performance of integrated circuits.
  • Ability to use concepts in quantum mechanics and apply for quantum communication and computing. 
  • Ability to design and analyse FPGA-SoC architectures for various embedded applications including IoT.
  • Ability to design new nano devices and circuits with high performance and low power conception.
  • Ability to apply EDA tools to model, design, develop and analyse CMOS integrated circuits and FPGA designs Ability to work constantly to improve skills and upgrade according to industry standards
  • Ability to apply standard software tools to understand and analyse the working of nano devices at a molecular level.
  • Ability to build, manage and lead a team to successfully complete a project and communicate across teams and organisations to achieve professional objectives.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have passed BE/B. Tech. or an equivalent degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and other related streams.
  • Candidates who belong to SC/ST categories are given a different qualifying mark as per government notifications
